we all dream of the sun, but live with the rain we all think of someone, we may never see again and when the waters come, it all floats away things we lost in the flood, can't all be replaced we all dream of the sun.. the bridge went out as the river rose and the sun died slow even the birds overhead were sounding alarm for their neighbors below there goes the drive and the mailbox too there goes the front porch and the living room there goes the curtains and now it's climbing the stairs there goes the dream you built on a hill there goes the photo albums and the record albums too there goes the couch where i made love to you there goes the kitchen i tiled myself there goes the books way up on the shelf there goes the city in a 500 year storm there goes the hospital where your children were born there goes our future along with the past there goes our dreams and they're sinking fast let it go, let-it-go, let-it-go, let it go, let-it-go, let-it-go... time's just a river sometimes it overflows torrents of change abandon the ghost let it go, let-it-go, let-it-go, let it go, let-it-go, let-it-go... time's just a river sometimes it overflows torrents of change abandon the ghost we all dream of the sun, but live with the rain we all think of someone, we may never see again and when the waters come, it all floats away things we lost in the flood, can't all be replaced we all dream of the sun

it was careless of my heart to be away so long when I was out there building fences, somehow you carried on now we're kicking at the embers of a long forgotten night it's not the only thing we lost to that fire time will change all things I wrote you from Alaska just to say that I was feeling better in some small way and I still remember how the sun would kiss your freckled face when we'd lay in the grass at Cheesman Park all day time will change all things and it's not for what we save, it's what we give away... (break) I was thoughtless with my youth and selfish too all the folks around me were always paying dues now I can see some things clearer, tho I have regret and I have fear there's some space in this heart I've yet to use... time will change all things I'm back in Seattle on my own the dog, the guitar and I just hit the road and I really can't say for certain, am I done with my searching? it's enough for right now to call this home time will change all things and it's not for what we save, it's what we give away...

time don't stop, it just wears the clock and i swear, we're all caught unaware those southern stars, they don't seem so far off as night descends on a dare sun cast across an empty room outside white azaleas bloom and a breeze caught antique chimes their tune played long into the night we watched the night sky spoke of the bad times and hoped for intelligent life somewhere, if not here, "the signs are not clear" you smoked, and turned with a smile time don't stop, it just wears the clock and i swear, we're all caught unaware those southern stars, they don't seem so far off as night descends on a dare (we drew) long shadows, as dawn's halo broke above the trees, as a song not one for farewells, you wear the tell-tales like a heart on the sleeve, all along when we watched night skies, spoke of the good times and hoped for intelligent life somewhere, if not here, "the signs are not clear" you joked, and turned with a smile we watched the night sky spoke of the bad times and hoped for intelligent life somewhere, if not here "the signs are not clear" you smoked, and turned with a smile...

the devil's tower in Wyoming parking lot full of coyotes never bled so red might as well have painted the floor and the chorus sounds just for your pious soul a yellow sundress and her hair in braids freckles on her cheeks and our plans were made got in the car and aimed for the setting sun reborn again as two lovers on the run well the cops got called and the paramedics came the sheriff got my plates from a bystanders claim saw our first set of cherries outside Sheridan not proud of what i done but we needed a new gun made it to Billings before the sun rose Livingston, Bozeman, Butte just up the road found an old dry creek to lay low and wait counted 13 patrol cars on the interstate Now, Angie was scared and she started to cry told her it'd all be ok, we weren't gonna die from a dingy little motel with walls all painted pink rust stains in the shower and a cockroach in the sink stole another lil cruiser and drove to Spokane now we're heading up north up Canada way Angie hasn't spoke a word to me all day she wants to call her mom but I told her that wouldn't be safe sped up on a roadblock just before Colville came outta nowhere just over a hill shotguns drawn over a concrete barricade slammed the car in reverse as Angie - she just prayed the devil's tower in Wyoming parking lot full of coyotes never bled so red might as well have painted the floor and the chorus sounds just for your pious soul

it's midnight for maladies when the heart holds no melody like the rarest bird you've ever seen we all collect calamity a mountain from your darkest dream songbird, knows not the song of which it sings intellectual armories no trumpet sounds for retreat we've all suffered greater agonies before we learnt the words to speak let down your arms and lift up your wings out of the woods and lost in the trees we'll race our own shadows survive our own battles let the whole mess unravel love for what matters let down your arms and lift up your wings out of the woods and lost in the trees we'll race our own shadows survive our own battles let the whole mess unravel love for what matters the science of ornithology disconcerting formalities here's to the men who escaped gravity far above the canopy across the continents and above the seas the rarest bird you've ever seen let down your arms and lift up your wings out of the woods and lost in the trees we'll race our own shadows survive our own battles let the whole mess unravel love for what matters let down your arms and lift up your wings out of the woods and lost in the trees we'll race our own shadows survive our own battles let the whole mess unravel love for what matters

they broke your heart into pieces more pieces then a heart can be made from Leviathan the whale, circumspect in jail just like the seed that you came from Don't push the river don't tear at the seams don't stand at the canyon the edge of perilous dreams when we rebuild we build anew that means we start from nothing Don't push the river it can flow by itself you question existence like any book on your shelf when we rebuild we build anew we start again from nothing the days run away, as the pendulum sways every bone in your body was put there to break time's just a trap, a slap on the back a curious abstraction, innocent distraction don't twist your spine, don't hunch your back don't wait for answers, learn how to react don't furrow your brow, don't grimace and sigh a daily reminder of the beast buried inside Don't push the river don't tear at the seams don't stand at the canyon the edge of perilous dreams when we rebuild we build anew that means we start from nothing Don't push the river it can flow by itself you question existence like any book on your shelf when we rebuild we build anew we start again from nothing

Blood will find a vessel like a book will find a worm stamen finds a pistil as they cauterize the wound damn your eyes, your wandering eyes the heart is just an organ wanting only to be played mine is often orphaned wanting only that you stayed damn your eyes, your drifting eyes time's just a river flooding the banks season of monsoon the torrential rains watching your body rise, damn your eyes an oak tree in the forest, whale bones in the sea it's more then the past affords us, our aching baby teeth damn your eyes, stop your crying the mystic and the profit the carnival of life a mystery for the skeptic who's just along for the ride damn your eyes, your cheating eyes rifle through your failed affairs, every brunette you betrayed summer's gone and autumn left but winter is here to stay damn your eyes, your bloodshot eyes the wind may chart a gentle course aloft the ancient deep no one charts the monsters below growing impatient and growing teeth damn your eyes, your angry eyes we pay our own way with bits of our soul blood in the grass and a broken nose the carnage of love's truth and love's lies damn your eyes...

there's a tree in the graveyard where my love laid down a willow in the tall grass in the cold, cold ground it's springtime in the country and new life abounds I guess we should feel lucky to be spared from the ground the days of my youth, the numbered, the fallen, forgotten and abused the hard times to follow, the bitter sting of truth and all the vows we have broken the days of my youth, the numbered, the fallen, forgotten and abused the hard times to follow, the bitter sting of truth all that we value will be abandoned there's a tree in the graveyard where my love laid down a willow in the tall grass in the cold, cold ground it's springtime in the country and new life abounds I guess we should feel lucky to be spared from the ground there's a note on the dresser in the spare room where your mother stayed after father died when we covered all the mirrors for the wake take all my sorrow there's got to be an end to grief... the days of my youth, the numbered, the fallen, forgotten and abused the hard times to follow, the bitter sting of truth and all the vows we have broken the days of my youth, the numbered, the fallen, forgotten and abused the hard times to follow, the bitter sting of truth all that we value will be abandoned there's a tree in the graveyard where my love laid down a willow in the tall grass in the cold, cold ground it's springtime in the country and new life abounds I guess we should feel lucky to be spared from the ground

headlights, starlight driving after midnight staring at the road ahead think I'd rather close my eyes instead your poison kiss still lingers on lips that haven't spoken since we last met now we'll spend our whole live's in debt the state of modern romance sleeping on a bed of nails I can't be your doormat you can't stop from casting sails imagine if Ahab had ever caught that whale... bookends, old friends tying up the loose ends thinking of the night that we first met well, they haven't finished the story yet staring out of windows wondering how did it all go wrong and if I only knew what you knew maybe we could've got along but darhling, i guess that ship has gone... the state of modern romance sleeping on a bed of nails I can't be your doormat you can't stop from casting sails imagine if Ahab had ever caught that whale... headlights, starlight driving after midnight staring at the road ahead think i'd rather close my eyes instead

I paint your form in every shade of gray although you're young as a fawn at the beginning of spring you're all the light in this world my sweet nadine and the dark that is left consumes me always there's a blue, there is a blue bird in a gray, in a gray sky and now night is approaching finally approaching finally the hour is late the moon it is spent your clothes on my bedpost your body at rest by this light I remember her best a flame quickly diminished and left me bereft there's a blue, there is a blue bird in a gray, in a gray sky and now night is approaching finally there's a song that I keep close there is a song that I keep mostly to remind me that something beautiful once sang for only me I paint your form under the restraints of night the hours stretch on the moon holds the tides by a force I can't reckon I am pulled astray the words you left me the night all of this changed there's a blue, there is a blue bird in a gray, in a gray sky and now night is approaching finally there's a song that I keep close there is a song that I keep mostly to remind me that something beautiful once sang for only me
